Transportation to/from Bloomington

First thing: fly to Indianapolis, not directly to Bloomington. If you fly directly to Bloomington, you'll likely find yourself in Minnesota or Illinois.

Getting to Indiana University from the Indianapolis Airport:

  1. You can take the Bloomington Shuttle, which goes straight to/from the Indiana Memorial Union. However, it only runs every two hours. If you plan to take the shuttle bus from Indianapolis Air Port, it is suggested that you make the reservation in advance.

We are trying to arrange with the Bloomington Shuttle people to stop at Wilkie Hall. As of June 12, we don't know if this is going to happen. If more people reserve spots on the shuttle, it is more likely that they'll agree.

  2. There is no regular taxi service between the Indianapolis Airport and Bloomington. There are limousine companies that arrange door-to-door service for up to eight people at a time. A ride on one of those costs more than a ride on the shuttle. But the limos run more frequently than the shuttle.
  3. Renting a car could be a good option for several people travelling together. But if you are thinking of renting, you will either have to keep the car for the week, or else check around to get a rental company that will not charge a drop fee. In addition to the standard rental companies, Ace Rent A Car has at times had inexpensive one-way rates to Bloomington. All of the rentals are off-site from the airport.

Driving directions

If you use MapBlast, it will give you some rather bizarre and arcane directions. I recommend taking the simpler route below.
  1. From the Indy airport terminals, you'll take a sharp 100 degree left curve; get into the far right lane.
  2. Turn right at the traffic light, and take the exit to 465 south, only about 200 feet from the light.
  3. Follow 465 as it curves and heads eastwards. Exit at 37 South.
  4. Stay on 37 South for about 45 miles, exit College Avenue.
  5. Continue on College Avenue and it will take you through the bustling downtown of Bloomington. Turn left on 10th street.
  6. Turn right at the intersection with Union St (the sixth traffic light).
  7. Follow Union Street towards the south 2 blocks, and turn right to 7th street.
  8. Turn left to Rose Ave (first left turn).
  9. Wilkie Quadrangle will be on your left hand and the parking lot will be on your right hand.
Total driving time is at most 1 hour 20 minutes.
